Methods at 14 Months
Ferber and CIO continue to be the most effective. At 14 months, your toddler understands cause and effect well enough that consistency is even more critical. Any inconsistency teaches them that protesting long enough eventually works.
Nap Transition in Full Swing
Fourteen months is the most common age for the 2-to-1 nap transition. During the transition period, you may have some 1-nap days and some 2-nap days. That's normal. On 1-nap days, move bedtime earlier (as early as 6:30 PM) to prevent overtiredness.
Adapting Check-ins for Toddlers
- Keep Ferber check-ins shorter (under 1 minute) since toddlers are more stimulated by your presence.
- Don't engage in conversation or answer requests during check-ins. A brief "I love you, it's time to sleep" is enough.
- If check-ins consistently make things worse, consider switching to CIO for a few nights.
- Be aware that your toddler may try new tactics with each check-in: fake coughing, calling your name, throwing objects.
Toddlers are master negotiators. Your calm, boring consistency is your greatest tool. React less, not more.
