Methods at 13 Months
Ferber and CIO remain the most effective structured methods for early toddlers. If you're starting sleep training for the first time at 13 months, expect slightly longer initial protests than you'd see at 6 months, but the same fundamental process works. Toddlers learn the new rules quickly once they see you're consistent.
The 2-to-1 Nap Transition Begins
Some babies start the 2-to-1 nap transition as early as 13 months, though most aren't truly ready until 14-15 months. Signs of readiness: consistently fighting or skipping the second nap for 2+ weeks, taking a long first nap (90+ minutes), and sleeping well at night.
Don't start sleep training and drop a nap at the same time. If the nap transition is underway, let the schedule stabilize first, or address nighttime sleep only and leave naps alone for now.
What to Watch For
- Your toddler may develop bedtime stalling tactics: requesting water, another story, one more hug.
- Keep the routine firm and predictable. One book, one song, one kiss, lights out.
- Walking toddlers may try to climb out of the crib. If this happens, ensure the mattress is at the lowest setting and consider a sleep sack to limit climbing.
