A wake window is a range, not a rule. These are typical figures for healthy, term babies. Follow your baby’s cues first — a baby who is clearly ready to sleep 20 minutes early should sleep.
A wake window is the amount of time your baby is awake between one sleep ending and the next one starting. It is the single most useful number in baby sleep, because it is the thing you can actually control. Get it right and your baby goes down with minimal fuss. Get it wrong in either direction and you get the same result — a baby who will not settle.

Wake windows get longer across the day
This is the part most charts leave out, and it is why a single average number never quite works. A baby who has just had 11 hours of night sleep has almost no sleep pressure built up, so the first wake window of the day is the shortest one. By late afternoon, sleep pressure has accumulated all day and the baby can comfortably stay awake much longer.
As a rough guide, if you take the typical wake window for your baby’s age as the baseline:
- First wake window (morning wake → nap 1): about 85% of the typical window. Shortest of the day.
- Second window (nap 1 → nap 2): about 95%. Close to the standard figure.
- Third window (nap 2 → nap 3): about 105%.
- Fourth window, if your baby still takes four naps: about 110%.
- Last window before bedtime: about 115%, and often more. This is the longest stretch of the day.
A 6-month-old with a 150-minute typical window, then, looks roughly like: 2h05 to nap 1, 2h20 to nap 2, 2h40 to nap 3, and 2h50–3h before bed. Using a flat 150 minutes all day would put nap 1 too late and bedtime too early.
The signs you are actually looking for
Ready for sleep
- Staring into the middle distance, losing interest in toys and faces
- Slower movements, quieter, less babbling
- First yawn, ear pulling, eye rubbing, red eyebrows
- Turning the face away from stimulation
Already overtired
- A sudden burst of frantic energy or giggling — this is a cortisol surge, not a second wind
- Arching, back-stiffening, inconsolable crying
- Fighting the bottle or breast when they are clearly hungry
- Falling asleep quickly but waking after 20–40 minutes
The yawn is a late sign. If you are waiting for the yawn, you are usually about 10 minutes late. Watch for the stare instead.
Undertired looks the same as overtired
Both produce a baby who will not go down, which is what makes this so maddening. The tell is what happens after: an undertired baby is cheerful in the crib, babbling and kicking for 20 minutes before either falling asleep or getting upset. An overtired baby cries immediately and escalates. If your baby is happily chatting in the crib every day, lengthen the window by 10–15 minutes. If they melt down the moment you leave, shorten it.
Short naps are usually a wake window problem
A 30–45 minute nap is one sleep cycle. If your baby consistently wakes at the end of the first cycle and cannot link into a second, the most common causes are, in order: the wake window before the nap was too short (not enough sleep pressure to push through), the wake window was too long (overtired, fragmented sleep), or the room is too light. Adjust the window in 10–15 minute steps and give each change three days before judging it.
Once you have wake windows roughly right, the next question is what the whole day looks like — see the sample sleep schedules by age. If your baby’s windows have suddenly stopped working entirely, they may be in a nap transition or the 4 month sleep regression.
Common questions
How do I know if my baby’s wake window is too long?
The clearest sign is that your baby cries the moment you put them down and escalates rather than settling, then wakes after a short nap. An overtired baby often also gets a burst of frantic energy just before the meltdown. Try shortening the window by 15 minutes for three days and see whether settling gets easier.
Does the wake window include feeding time?
Yes. The wake window runs from the moment your baby wakes up to the moment they fall asleep, including feeding, changing, play and the bedtime routine. If the routine takes 25 minutes, that time counts.
Why is the last wake window before bed the longest?
Sleep pressure builds through the day, so a baby can comfortably tolerate a longer stretch awake in the evening than they can first thing in the morning. The final window before bedtime is typically about 15% longer than the baby’s average window, and the first window of the day is about 15% shorter.
What if my baby wakes up before the wake window is over?
The wake window is measured from when the baby wakes, not from a fixed clock time, so an early wake shifts the whole day earlier. If it was a very short nap, many parents shorten the next window slightly to avoid stacking overtiredness through the day.
Do premature babies follow the same wake windows?
Use corrected age (age from the due date, not the birth date) for wake windows and nap counts during the first year or two. A baby born eight weeks early will typically follow the windows for their corrected age. Check with your pediatrician.
