Sleep Needs at 3 Months

At 3 months, babies typically need 14-16 hours of total sleep in a 24-hour period. This usually breaks down into 10-12 hours at night (with feeds) and 4-5 hours spread across 4 daytime naps. Sleep is still quite variable at this age, and a predictable schedule is just beginning to take shape.

Wake windows at 3 months are about 90 minutes (1.5 hours). Watch for sleepy cues like yawning, eye rubbing, or staring off into space before that window closes.

Common Challenges

Many 3-month-olds start resisting being put down for naps or begin the dreaded 45-minute nap cycle. This is developmentally normal as your baby becomes more aware of the world. Short naps are frustrating but common at this age because babies haven't yet learned to connect sleep cycles independently.

If naps are consistently short, try extending one nap per day using motion (stroller, car) or contact napping. Focus on getting at least one restorative nap of 1+ hours to prevent overtiredness.
