When Does This Transition Happen?
Most babies drop from 4 naps to 3 between 3.5 and 5.5 months. This is typically the first nap transition and often overlaps with the 4-month sleep regression, which can make it tricky to navigate. The good news is that it is usually the easiest transition — it happens naturally as wake windows lengthen.
Signs Your Baby Is Ready
- The 4th nap is consistently being refused or takes a very long time to fall asleep for.
- Wake windows have stretched to around 1.5-2 hours comfortably.
- Your baby can handle the late afternoon stretch without a meltdown.
- Bedtime is being pushed past 8:00 PM to fit in all 4 naps.
- These signs persist for at least 1-2 weeks (not just a few off days).
How to Transition
- Start by capping the 4th nap — keep it to just 15-20 minutes to preserve bedtime.
- Gradually lengthen wake windows to 1.75-2 hours between naps.
- Drop the 4th nap entirely when your baby can comfortably stay awake 2 hours before bedtime.
- Move bedtime earlier temporarily (as early as 6:00 PM) to compensate for the lost nap.
- Expect the transition to take 1-2 weeks for the new schedule to feel settled.
Sample 3-Nap Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake
- 8:30 AM — Nap 1 (1-1.5 hours)
- 11:30 AM — Nap 2 (1-1.5 hours)
- 2:30 PM — Nap 3 (30-45 minutes)
- 6:30 PM — Bedtime
During the transition, some days may still need 4 naps and others only 3. This is normal. Follow your baby's cues rather than forcing a rigid schedule.
