What Happens During Leap 4
Leap 4 peaks around week 19 and is one of the most significant developmental shifts in your baby's first year. Your baby begins to understand events: smooth, flowing sequences of changes rather than isolated moments. They start to grasp that one thing leads to another. Reaching for a toy, grasping it, bringing it to their mouth, and tasting it are all part of one continuous event.
Leap 4 is one of the most sleep-disruptive leaps. It coincides with a permanent change in sleep architecture known as the 4-month sleep regression. Unlike other leaps, the sleep changes during this period do not fully reverse.
Signs Your Baby Is in This Leap
- Dramatically increased fussiness and clinginess
- Shorter naps or complete nap refusal
- Much more frequent night wakings (every 1-2 hours)
- Increased appetite and comfort nursing
- Reaching for and grasping objects with clear intention
- More interest in cause and effect (shaking a rattle to hear the sound)
Why This Leap Hits Sleep So Hard
This leap overlaps with a fundamental maturation of your baby's sleep cycles. Newborn sleep has only two stages; around 4 months, it reorganizes into the adult-like four-stage cycle. Your baby now transitions between light and deep sleep multiple times per night, and each transition is a potential wake-up if they haven't learned to self-soothe. This biological change is permanent, which is why the 4-month regression is not really a regression but a progression.
How to Help Your Baby Through It
- Maintain or establish a consistent bedtime routine (bath, book, feed, bed)
- Put your baby down drowsy but awake when possible to begin building self-settling skills
- Keep the room very dark and use white noise
- Offer comfort but try not to introduce new sleep associations you'll need to undo later
- This is actually the ideal time to begin gentle sleep training if you are ready
What Emerges After the Leap
After Leap 4, your baby will be much more interactive and purposeful. They may start to roll, will grasp objects deliberately, and will begin to show interest in solid foods. Their personality shines through more clearly. While the new sleep architecture stays, sleep typically improves once your baby learns to navigate those sleep-cycle transitions.
