⚠️ Sleep Issues

False Starts (Waking 30-45 Min After Bedtime)

What Are False Starts?

False starts occur when your baby falls asleep at bedtime but wakes up 30-45 minutes later — essentially completing one sleep cycle and waking as if it were a nap. The baby often seems wide awake and has difficulty going back to sleep. This is one of the most telling signs that something in the schedule needs adjusting.

The Three Main Causes

Overtiredness

When the last wake window is too long, your baby becomes overtired. The body produces cortisol and adrenaline as a "second wind," which makes it harder to stay in deep sleep. The baby falls asleep quickly (because they are exhausted) but pops awake after one cycle because their stress hormones are elevated.

Undertiredness

When the last nap ended too close to bedtime or the baby napped too long, they simply are not tired enough for consolidated nighttime sleep. They treat bedtime as another nap and wake after one cycle refreshed.

Sleep Associations

If your baby falls asleep while being rocked, fed, or held, they may wake between cycles and feel confused by the change in environment — they fell asleep in your arms but woke up in a crib.

How to Fix False Starts

Keep a simple log: note the time the last nap ended and whether a false start occurred. After a week, the pattern usually reveals whether you need a longer or shorter last wake window.
