What Happens During Leap 6
Leap 6 peaks around week 37. Your baby is learning to categorize: a dog and a cat are both animals, a banana and an apple are both food. This ability to group things by shared characteristics is a fundamental building block of language and logical thinking. Your baby may also start to understand that they are a distinct person separate from you.
Signs Your Baby Is in This Leap
- More moody or clingy than usual
- Examining and comparing objects more carefully
- Sorting or grouping toys by type
- Pointing at things and looking at you for a response
- Beginning to understand simple words (recognizing "cat," "ball," "mama")
- More dramatic stranger anxiety
How Leap 6 Affects Sleep
This leap tends to cause moderate sleep disruption. Your baby is busy processing a new way of understanding the world and may be harder to settle. However, by 8-9 months most babies have some established sleep skills, which can buffer the impact. You may see a few nights of extra waking or some nap resistance, but it is typically less intense than Leaps 4 or 5.
How to Help Your Baby Through It
- Offer toys that encourage categorization: nesting cups, shape sorters, books with animal pictures
- Name things throughout the day to support budding language skills
- Keep your bedtime routine consistent
- Avoid making big sleep changes during the peak fussy period
- If your baby is crawling or pulling to stand, give plenty of practice time during the day
What Emerges After the Leap
After Leap 6, you may see a mini language explosion. Your baby will understand more words, may begin to say a few, and will show clearer preferences. They might point at a dog and look at you expectantly, or group their toy cars together. This categorization ability is the foundation for all future learning and language.
