Sleep Needs at 9 Months
Nine-month-olds need 12-14 hours of total sleep. Night sleep is typically 11-12 hours, and daytime sleep totals 2-3 hours across 2 naps. By now, many babies can sleep through the night without feeds, though some may still benefit from one nighttime feeding.
Wake windows have stretched to about 190 minutes (just over 3 hours), with the pre-bedtime window at 210 minutes (3.5 hours). These longer windows mean your baby is building good sleep pressure for solid naps.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 9:40 AM — Nap 1 (1-1.5 hours)
- 2:00 PM — Nap 2 (1-1.5 hours)
- 7:00 PM — Bedtime
Common Challenges
Crawling, pulling to stand, and cruising along furniture are all major milestones at this age. Your baby may be so excited about moving that they resist lying still for sleep. Nap protests are common — your baby might stand in the crib and cry rather than lie down. Separation anxiety from the 8-month window may also still be in play.
Ensure your baby gets plenty of physical activity during wake windows, especially in the morning. A well-exercised baby builds more sleep pressure and tends to fall asleep more easily. Structured playtime on the floor is more tiring than time in a bouncer or swing.
