What Is a Split Night?
A split night is when your baby wakes in the middle of the night and stays awake for an extended period — usually 1-2 hours — often seeming content or playful rather than upset. It is as if their night sleep has been "split" into two separate chunks. This is different from a brief night waking where the baby fusses and falls back asleep quickly.
The Root Cause
Split nights are almost always a schedule problem. The most common cause is too much total daytime sleep, which reduces sleep pressure at night. Your baby has simply gotten enough sleep by the middle of the night and is not tired enough to stay asleep through until morning.
Other Contributing Factors
- Too much total daytime sleep — the number one cause. Your baby is getting their 24-hour sleep needs met partly during the day, leaving insufficient sleep pressure for a full night.
- Bedtime too early — if bedtime is pushed too early, sleep pressure may run out by 1-2 AM.
- Developmental milestones — babies sometimes practice new skills (rolling, crawling, standing) during night wakings.
- Nap transition timing — during nap transitions, the schedule may temporarily create excess daytime sleep.
How to Fix Split Nights
- Cap total daytime sleep to the age-appropriate amount. For most babies 6-12 months, this is 2.5-3 hours.
- Push bedtime slightly later (by 15-30 minutes) to build more sleep pressure.
- Ensure the last wake window before bed is long enough — this is often the longest window of the day.
- Avoid "rescuing" naps — if a nap is short, resist extending it through intervention as this can add to the problem.
- Keep the room dark and boring during the waking. Do not turn on lights or engage in play.
Split nights typically resolve within 3-5 days once you reduce daytime sleep and adjust the schedule. If they persist beyond a week of changes, the schedule likely needs further adjustment.
