Methods at 8 Months
Ferber and CIO remain effective. The Chair method is still a good option and can be especially helpful if separation anxiety is strong. Pick Up Put Down is generally less recommended at this age since most 8-month-olds find the constant up-and-down overstimulating.
Separation Anxiety Begins
Around 8 months, babies develop stronger object permanence and may become more distressed when you leave the room. This can make the first night of training harder than it would have been a month earlier. Don't let this discourage you — it doesn't mean sleep training won't work; the initial protest may just be louder.
During peak separation anxiety, Ferber check-ins can sometimes make things worse. If your baby gets significantly more upset after each check-in, consider switching to CIO for a few nights or trying the Chair method where you remain in the room.
Mobility Challenges
- Crawling: Your baby may crawl to the crib rail and cry. This is normal positioning behavior.
- Pulling to stand: If your baby can pull up but can't get back down, practice sitting down from standing during the day.
- Lower the crib mattress to the lowest setting before starting sleep training.
- During check-ins, lay your baby back down once, then leave. Don't make a game of it.
