Sleep Training at 7 Months

Methods at 7 Months

All methods remain effective at 7 months. Ferber and CIO are the most common choices. The Chair method still works well for parents who prefer a gentler approach. Pick Up Put Down starts becoming less effective as babies get heavier and more physically active.

The Sitting Challenge

Many 7-month-olds can sit up independently but may not be able to lie back down from a sitting position. This creates a common sleep training complication: your baby sits up in the crib and cries because they can't get back down. During the day, practice the sit-to-lie transition. During training, lay your baby down once per check-in (or once when you notice them sitting), then let them work it out.

Nap Transition Timing

If your baby is transitioning from 3 to 2 naps, you may see temporary nap resistance or short naps. This is normal and doesn't mean sleep training has failed. Keep bedtime consistent and the nap schedule will stabilize within 1-2 weeks.

Don't repeatedly lay your baby down during a Ferber check-in. One gentle lay-down per visit is enough. Otherwise, the check-in becomes a new game.
