Methods at 16 Months
Ferber and CIO remain the best options. Your toddler now understands more language than they can speak, so you can start introducing simple sleep rules during the day: "When it's dark and we read our book, then we lie down and go to sleep." Don't expect immediate understanding, but the repetition builds association.
Using Routine as a Tool
- At 16 months, toddlers thrive on predictability. The same routine in the same order every night is your best ally.
- Add a brief "sleep cue" ritual: dim the lights, say the same phrase, and leave. This becomes a clear signal.
- Avoid screen time within an hour of bedtime. The stimulation makes settling harder at this age.
- Give your toddler controlled choices in the routine to reduce power struggles: "Do you want the blue pajamas or the green ones?"
Offering controlled choices (this book or that book, not whether to go to bed) gives your toddler a sense of autonomy without undermining the sleep boundary.
What to Watch For
Some 16-month-olds go through a phase of screaming at bedtime that sounds alarming but resolves within a few minutes. If your toddler was previously sleep-trained and starts this, it's typically a boundary test or mild regression. Return to your method consistently for 3-5 nights.
