Methods at 11 Months
Ferber and CIO are the most reliable choices. The Chair method still works for some babies but requires the parent to remain completely passive, which can be difficult with a more interactive 11-month-old. Your baby understands more than you might think and will quickly learn the new bedtime expectations if you're consistent.
What to Expect
- Protests may be louder and more determined than with a younger baby, but they also tend to resolve faster.
- Your baby can stand comfortably for extended periods, so standing in the crib during protests is common.
- Some babies briefly refuse a nap around this age. This is usually a developmental phase, not a nap transition. Keep offering 2 naps.
- First words make protests more emotionally challenging for parents. Have a plan to support each other.
Nap refusal around 11-12 months is almost never a sign that your baby is ready to drop to 1 nap. The 2-to-1 nap transition typically doesn't happen until 13-18 months. Keep offering both naps.
Approaching the First Birthday
If you're thinking about sleep training and your baby's first birthday is approaching, don't wait. Starting now is easier than starting with a true toddler. The window between 6-12 months is generally the most straightforward period for sleep training.
