Methods at 10 Months
Ferber and CIO continue to be the most effective structured methods. The Chair method can work but some 10-month-olds become overly stimulated by a parent sitting in the room, turning bedtime into a social event. If your baby reaches for you or tries to engage you during Chair, switch to a method with less presence.
New Challenges at This Age
- Cruising along the crib rail: Your baby may walk back and forth holding the rail. This is self-regulation, not distress.
- Babbling and calling out: Vocal babies may say "mama" or "dada" during protests. This can be gut-wrenching but is a normal part of testing boundaries.
- Throwing items out of the crib: Remove all toys and loose items. A lovey is fine if your pediatrician approves at this age.
- Separation anxiety is typically easing compared to 8-9 months, making this a slightly easier window.
When your baby says "mama" while crying, remember that they are using their best tool to get your attention, not expressing genuine despair. Stay consistent with your method.
Nap Training at 10 Months
If nighttime sleep training is going well but naps are still a battle, apply the same method to naps with a time limit. Give your baby 45-60 minutes to fall asleep for a nap. If they don't fall asleep, end the attempt and try again at the next nap window to avoid overtiredness.
