Why Moving Disrupts Sleep

A new home means a new room, new sounds, new smells, and a different feel to the air and light. For babies and toddlers, the sleeping environment is deeply tied to their sense of security. Even a move across town can disrupt sleep for a few days as your child adjusts to the unfamiliar space.

Timeline for Adjustment

Most children adjust to a new sleep environment within 3-7 days. Younger babies (under 6 months) often adjust fastest because they are less aware of environmental changes. Toddlers may take a full week to feel fully comfortable. During this period, offer extra comfort at bedtime but avoid creating new habits you will need to break later.

Do not use the move as a reason to abandon your sleep routines. The bedtime routine is the one thing that should remain exactly the same. It is the constant in a sea of change and will help your child feel secure.

If your toddler struggles with the new room, try spending a few minutes at bedtime pointing out the things that are the same: "Look, your same cozy blanket, your same sound machine, your same nightlight." Familiarity is reassuring.
