What the Research Says
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room sharing (but not bed sharing) for at least 6 months, ideally 12 months, to reduce the risk of SIDS. However, research also shows that babies who move to their own room between 4-9 months often sleep longer stretches, and parents tend to sleep better too.
Room sharing means baby sleeps in your room in their own crib or bassinet — not in your bed. The AAP recommendation is about room sharing, not bed sharing. Discuss the timing with your pediatrician based on your family's situation.
Signs Your Family Is Ready
- Your baby is at least 4-6 months old.
- Every small sound your baby makes wakes you up (and vice versa) — you are disrupting each other.
- Your baby has outgrown the bassinet and needs a full crib.
- You are finding it difficult to maintain a calming sleep environment in a shared room.
- Your baby is past the highest-risk period for SIDS.
How to Transition
- Start with naps in the nursery for a few days so your baby gets used to the new space while you are nearby and awake.
- Replicate the sleep environment exactly — same sound machine, same darkness level, same sleep sack.
- Move the crib or bassinet into the nursery (familiar sleeping surface in a new room).
- Use a video monitor for peace of mind. Position it to see the full crib.
- Keep your nighttime response plan the same — if you would go to your baby for a feed, do the same from the other room.
What Helps the Transition
- Spend positive awake time in the nursery before the switch — play, read, and feed there so it feels familiar.
- Move the sound machine and any comfort items (lovey, if age-appropriate) from your room to the nursery.
- Commit fully — going back and forth between rooms makes the adjustment longer.
- Most babies adjust within 3-5 nights, often faster than parents do.
Many parents find they were actually the ones waking the baby. Once in separate rooms, the baby may immediately sleep longer stretches simply because the parent is no longer accidentally rousing them.
