When Does This Transition Happen?
The 3-to-2 nap transition typically occurs between 6 and 9 months, with most babies ready around 7-8 months. This transition is often smoother than parents expect because it coincides with naturally lengthening wake windows.
Signs Your Baby Is Ready
- Consistently fighting or skipping the 3rd nap for 2+ weeks.
- Taking long, restorative first and second naps (1+ hour each).
- The 3rd nap pushes bedtime too late (past 7:30-8:00 PM).
- Wake windows have naturally stretched to 2.5-3 hours.
- Your baby seems happy and well-rested on days when the 3rd nap is missed.
How to Transition
- Drop the 3rd nap and move bedtime earlier by 30-60 minutes to bridge the gap.
- Gradually extend wake windows to 2.5 / 2.75 / 3 hours over 1-2 weeks.
- Expect an adjustment period of 1-2 weeks where your baby may be slightly crankier by evening.
- Protect the remaining 2 naps — ensure the sleep environment is optimal for longer, consolidated naps.
- On rough days, offer a brief 15-minute catnap or a very early bedtime rather than reverting to 3 naps.
Sample 2-Nap Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake
- 9:15 AM — Nap 1 (1-1.5 hours)
- 1:00 PM — Nap 2 (1-2 hours)
- 6:30-7:00 PM — Bedtime
The bridge from 3 to 2 naps is the earlier bedtime. Do not be afraid to put your baby down at 6:00 PM during the transition — it is temporary and prevents overtiredness.
