Sleep Needs at 6 Months
At 6 months, babies need 12-15 hours of total sleep. Night sleep is typically 10-12 hours, and daytime sleep is 2.5-3.5 hours across 2-3 naps. Many babies begin transitioning from 3 naps to 2 naps during this period, which is one of the most significant schedule shifts in the first year.
Wake windows are around 150 minutes (2.5 hours) during the day and stretch to about 210 minutes (3.5 hours) before bedtime. If your baby is still on 3 naps, the last wake window may be shorter.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 9:00 AM — Nap 1 (1-1.5 hours)
- 12:30 PM — Nap 2 (1-2 hours)
- 3:30 PM — Nap 3 (30-45 min, if needed)
- 7:00 PM — Bedtime
Common Challenges
The 3-to-2 nap transition often causes a few rough weeks. Your baby may fight the third nap but struggle to make it to bedtime without it. Teething commonly begins around 6 months and can temporarily disrupt sleep with gum discomfort. Starting solid foods can also cause minor digestive changes that affect sleep.
During the 3-to-2 nap transition, offer an earlier bedtime (as early as 6:00 PM) on days when your baby skips the third nap. This prevents overtiredness while the schedule settles into the new pattern.
