Sleep Needs at 5 Months

By 5 months, most babies need 12-15 hours of total sleep. Night sleep usually consolidates to 10-12 hours (some babies may still have 1-2 night feeds), and daytime sleep totals 2.5-3.5 hours across 3 naps. The 4-to-3 nap transition should be complete or nearly done by now.

Wake windows at 5 months are approximately 130 minutes (just over 2 hours), with the last wake window before bed stretching to about 150 minutes (2.5 hours).

Common Challenges

Five months is a sweet spot for establishing healthy sleep habits. The biggest challenges are usually lingering effects from the 4-month regression and figuring out the right wake windows. Many babies start rolling at this age, which can disrupt sleep briefly as they practice their new skill in the crib.

If your baby has started rolling, make sure they have plenty of tummy time during the day so rolling doesn't become a novelty they practice at 2 AM. Once they can roll both ways, it's safe to let them find their own sleep position.
