What Happens During Leap 2
Leap 2 peaks around week 8. Your baby is beginning to discover patterns: repeating shapes, sounds, and movements. They can now recognize simple structures in what was previously a blur of sensations. Hands are fascinating, shadows on walls are captivating, and your voice has a recognizable rhythm.
Leap 2 is one of the more sleep-disruptive leaps. The increased fussiness and clinginess during this period are well-documented, and many parents report noticeably worse sleep around weeks 8-9.
Signs Your Baby Is in This Leap
- Increased clinginess and crying
- Wanting to nurse or feed more frequently for comfort
- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- Staring at their own hands or at simple patterns
- More responsive to your facial expressions
- First genuine social smiles
How Leap 2 Affects Sleep
This leap tends to hit sleep noticeably. Your baby's brain is working overtime processing new pattern-recognition abilities, which makes it harder to wind down. Many parents report shorter naps, more night wakings, and a baby who will only fall asleep while being held. This is temporary and typically resolves within 1-2 weeks of the peak.
How to Help Your Baby Through It
- Maintain a consistent, calming pre-sleep routine even though it's early to have a formal schedule
- Offer extra comfort feeds if breastfeeding; this is not the time to space out feeds
- Use swaddling if your baby still enjoys it (and isn't rolling yet)
- Keep wake windows short (about 60-90 minutes at this age)
- Accept that this phase will pass. It is not a sign that anything is wrong
What Emerges After the Leap
After Leap 2 you'll see a more socially engaged baby. Expect more smiling, cooing, and attempts to interact. Your baby may begin batting at objects, tracking movement across a wider field, and showing preferences for certain sounds or visual patterns. Sleep often improves once the leap settles.
