Methods at 22 Months
Ferber and CIO are still the foundation, but at 22 months the behavioral wrapper around them matters as much as the method itself. Your toddler benefits from clear expectations set during the day, a visual routine, and consistent consequences for getting out of bed (calm return, no engagement).
Harnessing "I Do It Myself"
Instead of fighting your toddler's drive for independence, channel it into the bedtime routine. Let them put on their own pajamas (with help), choose a book, turn off the light, or tuck in their stuffed animal. When they feel ownership over parts of the routine, there's less resistance to the non-negotiable parts.
Preparing for the Toddler Bed
- If you haven't switched yet and your toddler isn't climbing, there's no rush. Many stay in a crib happily until 2.5-3 years.
- If the switch is coming, prepare: toddler-proof the room, install a baby gate, and practice "staying in bed" during the day.
- Consider an "OK to wake" clock that turns green when your toddler is allowed to get up. Introduce it 1-2 weeks before the bed switch.
- After switching, use a "silent return" strategy: every time your toddler gets up, calmly and silently walk them back to bed. No conversation, no eye contact, just return.
The "silent return" method can require 20-40 returns on the first night. It drops dramatically by night 3. Your calm persistence is the message.
