The Daycare Sleep Challenge
Daycare naps are rarely as good as home naps, and that is normal. The environment is stimulating, there are other children, the sleep space is different, and caregivers may not replicate your exact nap routine. Most parents find that daycare naps are shorter, and their baby compensates with an earlier bedtime or longer nighttime sleep.
Common Daycare Sleep Issues
- Shorter naps due to noise, light, or the excitement of being around other children.
- Different nap schedule than what your baby follows at home.
- One-nap schedule enforced at 12 months when your baby still needs two naps.
- Transition from crib to mat naps, which requires a skill many young toddlers do not yet have.
- Inconsistent timing because the schedule revolves around the group, not your individual child.
Communicating with Providers
- Share your child's current schedule and ask how closely they can follow it.
- Provide a sleep sack and ask if it can be used (some centers allow them, others do not).
- Ask about the nap environment — is the room darkened? Is white noise used? Are they in a crib or on a mat?
- If your child still needs 2 naps, discuss whether the infant room can accommodate this even if the toddler room is on a 1-nap schedule.
- Be direct about what matters most (wake windows, nap environment) and flexible about what does not (exact timing to the minute).
Compensating at Home
- On daycare days, move bedtime earlier to account for shorter or missed naps.
- On home days (weekends), follow the schedule your child does best on — do not feel obligated to match the daycare schedule at home.
- If your child naps poorly at daycare, avoid the temptation to let them take a late nap at pickup time — this usually backfires at bedtime.
- Expect that your child may need extra sleep on weekends to recover from the daycare week.
Babies and toddlers are remarkably adaptable. They can learn that nap rules are different at daycare than at home, just like they learn different rules at grandma's house. It does not undo your sleep training.
