Crib to Toddler Bed Transition

5 min read

The Number One Rule: Don't Rush

Most sleep experts agree: keep your child in the crib as long as safely possible. The ideal age to transition is 2.5-3 years. Toddlers under 2.5 generally lack the cognitive maturity to understand the boundary of "staying in bed," which leads to constant curtain calls, wandering, and sleep disruption.

The crib is not a prison — it is a safe, contained sleep space. Climbing out is the only safety reason to switch before 2.5. A new sibling, potty training, or "they seem ready" are not sufficient reasons to rush.

What to Expect

Even with a well-timed transition, expect 1-3 weeks of testing. Your toddler will get out of bed — possibly many times the first few nights. Respond with boring, brief returns to bed. Most children settle into the new routine within 2 weeks if parents are consistent.

If your child is climbing out of the crib but is under 2.5, try a sleep sack (makes climbing harder), turning the crib around so the higher side faces outward, or lowering the mattress to the floor inside the crib.
