Sleep Needs at 23 Months

At 23 months, toddlers need 11-14 hours of total sleep. Night sleep is 11-12 hours and the single nap runs 1-2 hours. The nap may naturally shorten as your toddler grows, but it remains an important part of the day. Dropping the nap entirely is still a long way off for most children.

Wake windows are approximately 340 minutes (5 hours 40 minutes) before the nap and 270 minutes (4.5 hours) before bedtime. Your toddler is approaching the schedule they'll keep for the next year or more.

Common Challenges

The 2-year sleep regression often arrives around now. Your toddler is testing every boundary, including bedtime. Nightmares may start as your toddler's imagination accelerates. Crib climbing may become a regular occurrence, raising the question of when to transition to a toddler bed. If possible, wait until closer to age 3 — toddlers under 2.5 generally lack the impulse control to stay in an open bed.

If your toddler is climbing out of the crib, put the crib on the lowest setting, remove bumpers and toys they could use as a step, and consider a sleep sack to limit leg mobility. Transitioning to a toddler bed too early often makes sleep problems worse, not better.
