Sleep Needs at 22 Months

Twenty-two-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep, split between 11-12 hours at night and a single nap of 1.5-2 hours. Your toddler's circadian rhythm is well established, and the daily routine should feel very natural by now. Nap length may be gradually shortening as your toddler heads toward 2 years.

Wake windows are about 330 minutes (5.5 hours) before the nap and 270 minutes (4.5 hours) before bedtime. Your toddler can handle a long, active morning with ease.

Common Challenges

The 2-year regression may begin slightly early for some toddlers. Watch for new fears (monsters, the dark), increased bedtime resistance, and night wakings. Molars coming in can also cause discomfort that disrupts sleep. If your toddler is in daycare, schedule changes there can also throw off the home routine.

If your toddler is getting their 2-year molars, cold foods (yogurt, frozen fruit) before bedtime can soothe gum pain. Maintain the nap even if your toddler resists — most children need a daily nap until at least 2.5-3 years old, and dropping it too early causes overtiredness.
