Sleep Needs at 21 Months
Twenty-one-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep with 11-12 hours at night and one nap of 1.5-2 hours. As nap length may begin to shorten slightly toward 2 hours or less, night sleep becomes even more important. The overall schedule remains consistent.
Wake windows are approximately 322 minutes (about 5 hours 22 minutes) before the nap and 270 minutes (4.5 hours) before bedtime. These longer morning stretches are well within your toddler's capacity at this age.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 11:52 AM — Nap (1.5-2 hours)
- 6:45 PM — Bedtime routine
- 7:15 PM — Bedtime
Common Challenges
Your toddler is increasingly verbal and may engage in elaborate bedtime stalling. Two-word phrases and growing vocabulary mean more creative requests. Potty training, if started, adds another variable to bedtime. Some toddlers also begin to resist the nap, though dropping it entirely is still months away.
Use a toddler clock (or a simple lamp on a timer) to make bedtime and wake time concrete and external. When the light turns off, it's sleep time. When it turns on, it's okay to get up. This removes you from being the "bad guy" who decides when the fun stops.
