Sleep Needs at 19 Months
Nineteen-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep, with 11-12 hours at night and one nap of 1.5-2.5 hours. If you recently came through the 18-month regression, things should be settling down. Your toddler's schedule is stable and predictable.
Wake windows are approximately 310 minutes (just over 5 hours) before the nap and 270 minutes (4.5 hours) before bedtime. Your toddler is comfortable with these longer stretches and can fill them with active play.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 11:40 AM — Nap (1.5-2.5 hours)
- 6:45 PM — Bedtime routine
- 7:15 PM — Bedtime
Common Challenges
Bedtime stalling tactics become more sophisticated as your toddler's language and cognitive skills grow. Expect requests for "one more" of everything — one more book, one more hug, one more sip of water. Some toddlers also begin climbing out of the crib, which is a safety concern that may require action if it becomes consistent.
Address all potential needs before you leave the room: offer water, use the potty if training, give a final hug. Then set a clear boundary. If your toddler is climbing out of the crib, lower the mattress to the floor of the crib before considering a toddler bed transition.
