Sleep Needs at 18 Months
Eighteen-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep, with 11-12 hours at night and a single nap of 1.5-2.5 hours. This is a well-established 1-nap schedule. However, the 18-month regression can make it feel like everything has fallen apart.
Wake windows are about 300 minutes (5 hours) in the morning and 270 minutes (4.5 hours) before bedtime. These are mature, toddler-length windows that will stay relatively stable for the next several months.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 11:30 AM — Nap (1.5-2.5 hours)
- 6:45 PM — Bedtime routine
- 7:15 PM — Bedtime
The 18-Month Sleep Regression
This regression is driven by a perfect storm: a vocabulary explosion, emerging independence, separation anxiety, teething (canines and molars), and the cognitive ability to test boundaries. Your toddler may suddenly refuse naps, scream at bedtime, or wake at night after months of sleeping well. It's exhausting, but it typically lasts 2-6 weeks.
The 18-month regression is one of the toughest, but the single most important thing you can do is stay consistent. Do not introduce new sleep crutches (rocking to sleep, bed-sharing) that you'll need to undo later. Ride it out with your existing routine and it will pass.
