Sleep Needs at 17 Months

Seventeen-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep. Night sleep is typically 11-12 hours and the single daytime nap is 1.5-2.5 hours. Your toddler should be well settled into the 1-nap routine by now, with wake windows that feel natural and comfortable.

Wake windows are approximately 285 minutes (4 hours 45 minutes), with the pre-bedtime window at 240 minutes (4 hours). Your toddler has the stamina for a full, active morning before their nap.

Common Challenges

The 18-month regression may start a little early. Toddlers at this age are undergoing a language explosion and are increasingly asserting their will. "No!" becomes a favorite word, and bedtime is no exception. Some toddlers also begin having night fears as their imagination develops, though full-blown nightmares are more common later.

Give your toddler safe choices to satisfy their need for control: "Do you want the blue pajamas or the green pajamas?" Offering two acceptable options lets them feel powerful without derailing the bedtime routine.
