Sleep Needs at 16 Months
Sixteen-month-olds need 11-14 hours of total sleep. Most toddlers have settled into a 1-nap schedule with a single midday nap of 1.5-2.5 hours and 11-12 hours of night sleep. The transition period should be winding down, and a predictable daily rhythm is emerging.
Wake windows are about 270 minutes (4.5 hours) during the day and 240 minutes (4 hours) before bedtime. The morning wake window is typically the longest stretch of the day now.
Sample Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Wake up
- 11:00 AM — Nap (1.5-2.5 hours)
- 6:30 PM — Bedtime routine
- 7:00 PM — Bedtime
Common Challenges
Toddlers at 16 months are developing strong preferences and may start testing limits at bedtime with requests for extra books, songs, or water. This is the beginning of the toddler bedtime negotiation phase. Setting clear, consistent boundaries now will pay off in the months ahead as your toddler becomes even more verbal and inventive.
Create a visual bedtime checklist your toddler can follow: bath, pajamas, two books, one song, lights out. When they ask for more, point to the checklist and say "We did everything on the list, now it's sleep time." Predictability helps toddlers accept boundaries.
