Sleep Needs at 15 Months

Fifteen-month-olds need 12-14 hours of total sleep. Your toddler is likely transitioning (or has recently transitioned) from 2 naps to 1 nap. The single nap is typically 1.5-2.5 hours, and night sleep is 11-12 hours. Some toddlers at this age are still happily on 2 naps — that's normal too.

If on 1-2 naps, wake windows average about 240 minutes (4 hours). Once the transition is complete, your toddler will handle roughly 5 hours awake in the morning and 4 hours before bedtime.

Common Challenges

The morning stretch is the hardest part of the 1-nap transition. Your toddler may be cranky and overtired before the single nap. This is temporary — within 2-3 weeks, most toddlers adjust to the longer morning wake window. Early wake-ups are also common during this transition because overall daytime sleep decreases.

Offer a small snack around 11:00 AM to bridge the energy gap before the nap. Low blood sugar contributes to crankiness, so a quick snack can buy you the last hour before naptime. Outdoor play in the morning also helps burn energy and build sleep pressure.
