13-Month Sleep Guide

Sleep Needs at 13 Months

Thirteen-month-olds need 12-14 hours of total sleep. Night sleep is 11-12 hours and daytime sleep is 2-2.5 hours across 2 naps. This is the earliest age when some toddlers begin showing signs of readiness for the 2-to-1 nap transition, but most are not quite there yet.

Wake windows are about 210 minutes (3.5 hours) during the day and 240 minutes (4 hours) before bedtime. Watch for signs that your toddler is ready for longer wake windows — consistently fighting naps and taking a long time to fall asleep.

Sample Schedule

Signs the 2-to-1 Nap Transition Is Coming

Look for these signs over at least 2 weeks before considering the transition: consistently fighting or skipping the second nap, taking 20+ minutes to fall asleep for naps, the second nap pushing bedtime too late, or happily staying awake for 4+ hours. A few days of nap resistance is not enough — wait for a consistent pattern.

If your toddler is showing signs but you're not sure, try stretching wake windows by 15 minutes rather than dropping the nap immediately. Many 13-month-olds just need slightly longer wake windows, not fewer naps.
