Sleep Needs at 10 Months

Ten-month-olds need 12-14 hours of total sleep per day. Most babies are on a solid 2-nap schedule with 11-12 hours at night and 2-3 hours of daytime sleep. The schedule may feel quite predictable now, which is a welcome change from the rapid shifts of earlier months.

Wake windows are about 200 minutes (3 hours 20 minutes) during the day and 210 minutes (3.5 hours) before bedtime. Some babies start stretching toward longer windows as they approach their first birthday.

Common Challenges

A temporary nap strike is common around 10 months. Your baby may refuse one or both naps for a week or two. This does not mean they're ready to drop to 1 nap — that transition is still months away. The strike is usually driven by developmental leaps (standing, first words) and passes on its own.

During a nap strike, keep offering naps at the usual times. Even if your baby doesn't sleep, the quiet crib time helps them rest. Avoid dropping to 1 nap before 13-14 months — doing so too early usually leads to chronic overtiredness.
